Figure 13.7 Low centre of mass base position.

Before reacting to a stimulus, an athlete tends to have more upright trunk entry and exit positions to allow for a more balanced position. Small considerations about task-specific, position-specific and situation-specific requirements during change of direction explains why more holistic physical development for even the most demanding change of direction is recommended and why one particular technique cannot be strictly enforced.

A body position that places the centre of mass low and closer to the direction of intended travel allows for optimal production of hip-extension velocity through the use of triple extension. This is the characteristic body position for effective and efficient change of direction. When defending or performing any agility (reaction to a stimulus) drill, an athlete needs to adopt a more upright and balanced posture upon a CODS entry that will modify the subsequent body position at exit. It is therefore vital to consider all factors when giving body-position coaching advice to an athlete.
